5HTP
5-HTP or to give its full name "5-hydroxy-tryptophan" is the precise precursor of serotonin. 5HTP is often used in place of SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) drugs and L-Tryptophan to treat severe depression or alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
If you have decided to search the web for 5htp you are probably already aware of many of the benefits of this supplement, here are a few you may not have known about:
- 5HTP passes more easily through the blood-brain barrier, (which is often a limiting factor on serotonin levels)
- 5HTP is not used elsewhere in the body, (e.g. for making proteins). Hence the supplement isn't lost through competition from other functions.
- 5HTP is not used to make vitamin B3 (a process which is costly in terms of L-Tryptophan).
- 5HTP does not risk the side effects on the liver associated with L-Tryptophan, as it is metabolized
- 5HTP increases the activity of dopamine and noradrenaline in the brain.
L-Tryptophan is first converted to 5-HTP in nerve cells by a vitamin B3 dependant enzyme. The 5-HTP thus produced then converts to serotonin through a vitamin B6 dependant enzyme.
However 5-HTP passes through the blood brain barrier into the brain with greater ease than tryptophan. Getting tryptophan through the blood / brain barrier is perceived to be the primary hindrance, which in many people leads to inadequate brain serotonin levels.
Contraindications to 5HTP can include hypersensitivity. Serious renal insufficiency can occur through prolonged use to 5HTP. Liver disease (in which patients may not be able to regulate 5-HTP adequately). Avoid use with other serotonin enhancing agents such as SSRI drugs (ProzacŪ) etc. Patients taking Alpha methyldopa and methysergide should be cautious because the former substances block the peripheral decarbixylation of 5HTP.
Occasional side effects can include gastrointestinal upset, hypomania, and euphoria. 5HTP may also induce lethargy in some individuals.
DOSAGE
50mg to 100mg a day (see cautions), best taken prior to bedtime.
CAUTIONS
A doseage of 5-HTP in excess of 200mg daily is not recommended..
